‘Mentor vs. student’ looms in Bulacan’s gubernatorial race
MALOLOS CITY, Bulacan – The two top incumbent officials in this province are not swapping positions but are both aiming for the gubernatorial seat in the 2022 elections.Governor Daniel R. Fernando will run under the National Unity Party (NUP) while his former teacher and long-time partner, Vice Governor Wilhelmino Sy-Alvarado will be the Partido Demokratikong Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) bet.On Wednesday, Alvarado, represented by his wife, former rep. Marivic Alvarado and his lawyers, filed his certificate of candidacy (COC).The vice governor is reportedly under home quarantine after he tested positive for the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) over the weekend.It was learned that Fernando talked and tried to convince Alvarado several times to be his partner.Instead, Alvarado chose former governor Jonjon Mendoza to be his partner.Mendoza formally filed his COC also on Wednesday together with Rep. Jonathan Sy-Alvarado, who is eyeing his third term in the first district of Bulacan.Meanwhile, Board Member Alex Castro also joined the NUP party to be pitted against Mendoza.Fernando-Castro tandem under NUP is set to file their COCs on Thursday.
